Hi Billy. Welcome to MR’s Monthly Question Column! We are so excited to have you as our special guest for the month of June.

Question: How is love the solution to social and racial problems or any wars we are facing in today’s modern world? Billy’s Response:

Thank you so much, Hannah, for asking me to give you what I think, from a Biblical viewpoint, is the answer to your question, “How is love the solution to social problems and any wars we are facing in today’s modern world?” 

This really is not a modern day question. That was the question raised in the Garden of Eden when man disobeyed God. When we use the word ‘love’, most of us forget that there are two kinds of love. Yes, that’s right! Before Adam decided to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, there was only good love—God’s unselfish love for all of His family. God governs by means of His one and only law: unselfish love.

When Adam chose to eat from the tree, he chose selfish love—bad love. As mankind has moved through the millennia of time, and hundreds of different cultures, every one of them has had certain people that used their fellow humans. Why? Because of selfishness. This is the cancer that was introduced to humanity in the garden,and has been consuming us ever since. But this cancer is now growing at a rapid rate.

That’s why it’s time to take a good look at our modern day! Are we on the verge of change? I think that goes without saying. But why now? Can love bring about the changes that are needed? Yes, it can and it will. But not by means of the hands of mankind. 

As I stated earlier, mankind has had thousands of years to prove that we can govern ourselves without God. And we as humans have always failed miserably. Contrary to what most people believe, God has not intervened in the affairs of mankind. He did deal with the nation of Israelfor some time, but even their leaders chose selfishness over the love of their own nation.They rejected the son of God.

But after the death of Jesus Christ, God has let mankind do his own thing. Revelation 12:6 Common English Bible (CEB)

6 Then the woman fled into the desert, where God has prepared a place for her. There she will be taken care of for one thousand two hundred sixty days. 

Who is this woman? This is speaking about the kingdom of God that has remained in hiding for a certain amount of time. It is now almost time for that kingdom to be revealed. And, as anyone can see within the last one hundred or so years,the world has changed like it has never changed before! Matthew 24:34 Common English Bible(CEB)

34 I assure you that this generation won’t pass away until all these things happen.

That is what Jesus told his disciples after giving them multiple               signs that would indicatehis return. Remember, Jesus told us:

9 Pray like this: Our Father who is in heaven, uphold the holiness of your name. 10 Bring in your kingdomso that your will is done on earth as it’s done in heaven.

As I look around the world today, I do not see “good love”. It is obvious that the kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for to bring about God’s will here on earth has not yet arrived. I still see what John saw,

19 We know we are from God (if we have unselfish love), and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

How do we know that Satan has control of this world? Listen very carefully to one of the temptations that he tried to use to get Jesus to do exactly what he did to tempt Adam and Eve by trying to get him to choose self over others. This is found at,

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.                                  

Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he would just do one act of worship to him! All the kingdoms or governments of the world belong to Satan! So, according to the scriptures, all of our past cultures and the god’s they worshiped are in fact from Satan. If you have not realized by now, Satan governs by means of selfish love. This is what Jesus had to say about Satan when speaking to the Pharisees(the religious leaders of the nation of Israel in the time of Jesus) about themselves, 

John 8:44 New International Version (NIV)

44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

That is why all past societies have failed, because they were all based in the law of selfish love. Putting one’s self interest before others. Now, to our present society. Look around you! What is going on? Can the Bible give us to some answers?

Jesus tells us many things about the last days just before his return. One of them is found at Luke 21:25-26:

25. And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity [at] the roar of the sea and rolling waves, 26. men ready to die through fear and expectation of what is coming on the habitable earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.  

I don’t have to tell you how many signs that have been happening astrologically within this generation. So, by now, you are probably curious as to this generation that Jesus was informing us about. How do we know this is the one?

Distress of nations in perplexity of the roar of the sea and the rolling waved. Is this speaking of water? Of course not! It’s talking about people. Social media has made it where one person can start a wave of energy that can travel around the world in a matter of hours. Just look at past and present events.  

All this agitation has the nations (governments)in distress, not knowing what to do. All you hear on the news is about the fear people are going through in this world. This is what Jesus told us would happen at the beginning of this, the last generation.

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Let’s start with the first thing he spoke about: Many coming to us on the basis of his name,claiming to be the way to him. Did you know that there are 41,000 different religions of Christianity? All claim to be the way to Christ!

People tell me all the time, “Yes, Billy, but that stuff has been going on for thousands of years.” But it hasn’t! This generation has seen more of the events that Christ spoke about than any previous generation.

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

The attitude of mankind has gotten, and is getting, more and more about self with no regard for the feelings or property of others. Organizations or even governments can start out with good intentions, but selfishness and the desire to control others is how it will always end.

Now let’s see if we can determine how long this ‘generation’ would be. A ‘generation’, as spoken of in the Bible, means the natural life span of a human being. But how long is that? According to what the Bible says, that would be one hundred and twenty years. 

And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he also is flesh; yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.”

Now if we start in the year 1914, and add 120 to that, we get the year 2034. Do I know that the world will be changed by God before or around then? No I don’t! Even Jesus himself said:

36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,[a] but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

So, if we are in what the Bible calls ‘the last days’, things will continue to get worse for a time. But there will arise a leader or an organization that will seem to bring about peace and security. Why do I say that? Because the Bible tells us that God said this: 1 Thessalonians 5:3 Common English Bible(CEB)

3 When they are saying, “There is peace and security,” at that time sudden destruction will attack them, like labor pains start with a pregnant woman, and they definitely won’t escape.

So it will have an appearance that love has finally brought about change to social problems and the end of wars, but, according to the Bible, don’t believe it.  But the way to life is through unselfish love.

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 this is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Both of these laws have one thing in common;they are both based on love of others, or unselfish love. Stay true to this law no matter what comes upon you!
